Sage Active or Sage 50: two software programs from the same publisher, two approaches designed for very different business realities. Here are the criteria that allow you to make the right choice.
Sage Active and Sage 50 are two software products from the Sage group for distinct profiles. Sage Active is a 100% cloud solution for small businesses with up to 19 employees who outsource their accounting. For VSEs and SMEs that have an in-house accountant, Sage offers Sage 50, a hybrid Desktop + Cloud software.
What is Sage Active?
Sage Active is the Sage group’s software for small structures. 100% cloud, it targets VSEs with up to 19 employees whose managers manage their invoicing independently and delegate their accounting to an external accountant, according to independent.io (July 2025).
The software offers two options. Sage Active Starter covers invoicing and commercial management, with accounting remaining entirely outsourced. Sage Active Essentials allows partial accounting management internally, while requiring an accountant to prepare the tax return. In both cases, the accountant has direct access to the software, without exchanging files.
What is Sage 50?
Sage 50 is the Sage group’s software for structures that have internalized their accounting. Designed for VSEs and SMEs, it covers accounting and commercial management using a hybrid architecture: local installation on the workstation, data synchronized in the cloud. As a result, the software runs without an internet connection, where a full SaaS solution stops in the event of a network outage.
Sage 50 covers the entire French regulatory accounting cycle: configurable general accounting plan, multi-level analytical accounting, production of tax packages, EDI-TDFC electronic declaration to the DGFiP. It exists in three versions depending on your needs:
- Sage 50 Accounting
- Sage 50 Sales Management
- Sage 50 Business Management (which brings together the two modules without re-entry between commercial and accounting flows)

Which profile for which software?
Sage Active is aimed at small business managers who manage their invoicing independently but entrust their accounting to an external accountant. It is a tool designed to quickly carry out routine operations: issue an invoice, track your receipts, provide access to your accountant without exchanging files. The accounting complexity remains on the side of the firm, not the company.
Sage 50 corresponds to a different profile: a VSE or SME which has an in-house accountant and which needs a complete environment to manage its accounting from A to Z, produce its tax packages and manage its commercial flows from a single tool. It is also the software to which a company naturally migrates when it grows and internalizes its accounting.
Electronic invoicing 2026: both solutions are compliant
More than 10 million economic actors fall within the scope of the electronic invoicing reform, according to economie.gouv.fr. Sage Network, the approved platform of the Sage group definitively registered by the DGFiP in December 2025, is natively integrated into both formulas at no additional cost, according to data published by Grafe, Sage certified integrator, in April 2026.
On this point, Sage Active and Sage 50 are equal: Sage Network is natively integrated into both solutions, at no additional cost and without a separate subscription. Activation is done directly from the software. The Factur-X, UBL and CII formats are supported, thus covering the obligations for issuing, receiving and transmitting e-reporting data to the tax administration.
Frequently asked questions about Sage Active and Sage 50
Can we use Sage Active and Sage 50 in parallel in the same company?
The two software programs cover the same basic functions and are aimed at distinct profiles. Using them in parallel would generate double entry and fragmentation of accounting data. The logic of the Sage ecosystem is to choose the solution adapted to the stage of development of the company, then to migrate if needs evolve.
Can we move from Sage Active to Sage 50 if the company grows?
The transition from Sage Active to Sage 50 is the natural trajectory for a small business that internalizes its accounting as it grows. As both solutions belong to the Sage ecosystem, data migration is made easier. It is recommended to anticipate this transition outside the accounting closing or VAT declaration periods to avoid any interruption of activity.
Are Sage Active and Sage 50 compatible with all accountants?
Both software include secure access for the accountant, who can intervene remotely without exchanging files by e-mail. Compatibility does not depend on the firm: it is the native access to the file which guarantees the fluidity of exchanges, whatever the size or organization of the accounting firm.
How many users can I add to Sage Active?
Sage Active is designed for one primary user per account. Additional users can be added for a monthly cost per user, which varies depending on the plan chosen. For companies that need extensive multi-user access without additional cost per station, Sage 50 offers more suitable access management.
Is Sage 50 suitable for multi-site businesses?
Sage 50 provides multi-depot management for inventory and multi-level cost accounting, making it usable in simple multi-site setups. For more complex needs involving several legal entities or multi-company consolidation, Sage directs towards Sage 100, designed for this type of structure.
Do you have to choose your approved platform separately if you use Sage Active or Sage 50?
Sage Network is natively integrated into Sage Active and Sage 50 and is activated directly from the software, without any additional registration process. Activation is recommended before June 2026 to anticipate the September 1 deadline, according to recommendations published on sage.com. Unlike other approved platforms on the market which bill for this service separately, Sage Network is included at no additional cost in all plans for both software.
