It looks like a luxury gadget. This inflatable bubble protects especially against invisible enemies.
At first glance, the object seems almost absurd. A car enclosed in a large transparent bubble, like a supercar on display at a car show. However, this protection was not designed to look pretty or to impress the neighbors. It is mainly used to preserve vehicles which remain stationary for a long time.
Contrary to what its appearance suggests, this bubble is not a giant airbag. It does not seriously protect against shock, theft or vandalism. Its role is different: to create a ventilated mini-environment around the car, more stable than a damp or poorly insulated garage. The principle is simple. The car is placed on a PVC base, then enclosed in a transparent envelope closed with a zip. One or more fans keep the structure inflated and circulate air continuously. This permanent flow prevents humidity from stagnating around the vehicle.
Because the real danger, for a car stored for several weeks, is not always visible. In a cold or damp garage, condensation can settle on metal parts. Over time, it promotes corrosion, bad odors, mold, aging of joints and even certain electrical problems. This is where the bubble comes in handy. It protects above all against dust, humidity, condensation, insects, stagnant air and, on certain exterior models, UV rays. In short, it acts less like armor and more like a conservation chamber.
The concept has existed since the 1990s, notably with specialized brands like Carcoon. Originally, these protections were mainly aimed at collectors, owners of old cars, sports cars or convertibles, who wanted to preserve their vehicle during the winter or a long period of downtime.
Price-wise, the first serious interior models start around 400 to 500 euros. The exterior versions, more resistant to sun, rain and wind, cost between 600 and 1,200 euros. Premium or showroom models can cost several thousand euros. Power consumption generally remains low because the fans operate at low voltage.
This screen is therefore not essential for a car used every day. It is even impractical if you have to open and close the protection each time you travel. On the other hand, it becomes relevant for a collector’s car, a convertible, a sports car or a vehicle stored for several months in a damp garage. It does not turn a car into a safe. But for a vehicle that sleeps for a long time, this simple air bubble can prevent the most feared damage: those that appear slowly, when the car is no longer moving.
