Why generative AI redistributes power to press relations

Why generative AI redistributes power to press relations

Generative AI is transforming online visibility: it is no longer enough to be well referenced, you must be cited. These systems give press relations a strategic role in reputation again.

In 2026, we must stop considering press relations as a simple reputation lever. This mental software is a thing of the past. We have entered a citation economy and in this new regime, PR is no longer a tool of peripheral influence, but a direct determinant of algorithmic visibility.

With systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, the promise of the web has been reversed. Yesterday, you had to be well ranked. Today, you have to be selected. The nuance is brutal: we are no longer talking about appearing in a list, but of existing in a response.

And this response is not neutral.

It is built.

Generative engines no longer refer to pages: they produce a summary, choosing or not to cite certain sources based on their authority, credibility and editorial readability. In other words, they editorialize the web for users.

This changeover is documented. A seminal academic study on Generative Engine Optimization shows that these systems display an “overwhelming” bias in favor of content from third-party media and editorial sources, to the detriment of branded content. It’s a strategic break: what you say about yourself matters less than what credible third parties say about you

Even more striking, less than 10% of the sources cited by these AIs match the top-ranked results on Google for the same queries. SEO and generative visibility are now two separate battles.

And while marketing departments continue to optimize their pages, AI is redesigning the hierarchy of information. This shift has a direct consequence: the rise in power of press relations as a lever for algorithmic performance.

Because in this new ecosystem, authority is no longer a technical metric. It’s an editorial construction.

The models favor:

– embodied, signed, identifiable sources

– recognized publications

– expertized and contextualized content

In the healthcare field, for example, more than 75% of sources cited by AIs come from established institutions or reference publications. The signal is clear: editorial credibility is no longer a “plus”, it is a prerequisite to exist.

PR then becomes again what it should never have ceased to be: a factory of authority. But the story doesn’t end there. Because this new visibility is also deeply misleading…

According to several analyses, between 65% and 80% of AI-generated citations produce no clicks to the source sites. This is the paradox of “zero generative clicks”: you can be massively present… without ever seeing it in your analytics.

Worse: since the integration of the responses generated in the engines, some media have observed traffic drops of up to 26%. Be careful, visibility does not disappear, it moves. It leaves measurable interfaces to settle in invisible layers.

PR (re?) then becomes a lever of influence without direct return. A speech that acts in the shadow of interfaces

This is where everything comes into play.

Because these systems do not quote randomly. An analysis of more than a million queries shows that AI relies heavily on content from journalists, experts, influencers or specialized publications. Even new sources like NL or podcasts enter into this mechanism, but always via their perceived legitimacy.

The truth is simple: AI does not “make” authority. She recognizes her.

And she redistributes it. What is emerging, implicitly, is a complete redefinition of the visibility value chain.

Branded content becomes raw material. Press relations become an amplifier of credibility.

AIs become synthetic referees. And in the middle, a silent battle: that of being cited.

Calling this a “new El Dorado” for PR is in fact quite simplistic because it is in reality a strategic rehabilitation. In a world where answers precede clicks, where summaries replace journeys, where machines rewrite reality from selected sources, press relations are no longer a showcase.

They are infrastructure. A trusted infrastructure.

A presence infrastructure. An infrastructure of truth.

And yesterday like tomorrow the only one that will really count.
