Backed by Y Combinator, Emergent promises to generate native web and mobile projects from a simple prompt. Our test shows an effective tool, but expensive as soon as the iterations multiply.
Like application generators such as Lovable or Bolt, Emergent allows you to create sites or applications in natural language. One promise sets it apart from its competitors: its ability to generate native mobile applications, ready to be published on theApp Store and Google Play. The Emergent interface is intended to be minimalist, in line with current standards. The tab system is particularly practical: it allows you to move from one project to another without reloading the page.
From the first connection, the solution prompts you to choose the type of project: web, mobile or landing page. The platform offers the choice between several cutting-edge models and allows the import of reference documents such as files DESIGN.md. The Pro plan goes further by integrating native MCPs, Stitch, Supabase or Notion, or custom connectors.
A convincing first application in a single prompt
Before launching, we brainstormed our prompt with a traditional LLM to provide Emergent with detailed instructions. For our first test, we wanted to create an app that allowed employees to scan their expense reports and send them for reimbursement. Here is the prompt we used:
Before even writing a line of code, Emergent asks questions to better frame the first generation, in particular details on the functionalities to be implemented, the authentication methods, database management, etc. After generating the code, which took around ten minutes, Emergent starts a test agent which will try all the functionalities of the application in order to avoid errors.
Native integration with Expo Go
One of Emergent’s major assets is its native integration with Expo Go. It is a mobile application that allows you to test React Native applications directly on your phone, without going through a complete compilation. Emergent displays a QR code directly in its interface. By scanning it with Expo Go, the application instantly loads on our smartphone.
Quite surprisingly, in a single request, the application generated correctly, and all features were operational, including camera integration and OCR on receipts, without adding an additional API key for such a service. No errors visible on the screen, no crashes. For a first generation without iteration, this is rare enough to be highlighted.
As Lovable allows, Emergent offers a “Universal LLM Key”. This system provides access to the most efficient models on the market (GPT-5, Claude, Gemini) via single billing based on platform credits, without having to manage multiple API keys.
From testing to deployment: the real difference of Emergent
Emergent automates all the preparation steps before publication: you can run a “health check” which scans the code to detect potential blockages. Then, Emergent generates the final files (APK/AAB for Android, IPA for iOS) and manages the cryptographic signature. The process takes approximately 5-7 minutes to prepare, and up to 20-30 minutes to generate a final Android build.
By downloading the APK file, you can test the application directly on an Android smartphone. Be careful, however, to enable installation via unknown sources in the device settings. On iOS, Emergent relies exclusively on Expo Go. However, the risk of rejection by the stores remains. If the application is refused, simply copy the error message from Apple or Google into the chat for the agent to correct the code.
Behind the scenes, Emergent relies on Expo, an open source framework based on React Native. It is this which allows you to generate an iOS and Android compatible application from a single code, and to exploit Over-The-Air updates (updates sent directly via the Internet without going through store validation). Its build service (EAS) is normally paid for beyond 30 monthly generations, but Emergent integrates it into its pipeline: the cost is therefore already covered by your credits.
Limits on more advanced requests
To push the tool to its limits, we launched a second test with a much more complex application dedicated to business collaboration (see our prompt here). During this second test, we encountered several responsive design and button placement issues. The generated user interface (UI), although functional, lacks a “premium” finish and remains very generic. In addition, the mobile preview directly in the computer browser is limited to 30 minutes, which complicates long test sessions and requires systematically switching to the physical smartphone via Expo Go. Emergent is therefore not magic: for a complex application, it will be necessary to iterate at length via chat to refine the design and functionalities.
The credit model: pay attention to the invoice
Emergent works with a credit system, and the bill can quickly add up. If the free plan (10 credits/month) allows you to discover the interface, you will have to checkout for a real project. The $20/month Standard plan offers 100 credits. However, simply starting the active deployment of an application consumes around 50 credits. During our test of creating the expense report application, we consumed 137 credits, including 50 for deployment. A cost that can increase if you opt for a larger CPU and RAM.
For projects requiring numerous iterations, the Pro plan at $200/month (750 credits) will quickly become essential. Finally, don’t forget that submitting to the stores involves incompressible fees imposed by Apple and Google: $25 one-time payment for the Play Store, and $99/year for the App Store.
The balance sheet
Emergent allows you to quickly generate testable native mobile applications, without going through a traditional development cycle. The promise of speed and simplicity is generally kept. However, the tool shows its limits: often generic interfaces, still limited customization and a credit model which can quickly become restrictive. As it stands, it stands out above all as an effective solution for validating a concept, or even publishing simple applications, but remains insufficient for designing complex and truly differentiating products.
