The year 2026 marks a milestone in the relationship between France and India. On February 17, the two countries officially inaugurated the Franco-Indian Year of Innovation in Mumbai, according to France in India (diplomatie.gouv.fr), after the event was announced in 2024. This is part of the Horizon 2047 roadmap, which sets three symbolic deadlines: the centenary of Indian independence, the centenary of bilateral diplomatic relations and the fifty years of strategic partnership. A long-term ambition, which deserves to be questioned in light of the first months that have passed.
A partnership structured around concrete priorities
The initiative is structured around several clearly identified pillars: aerospace, health and food, energy transition, emerging technologies. L’artificial intelligence occupies a central place since the two countries display a common desire to exert influence in this area. This structuring by sector avoids the pitfall of cooperation which would remain incantatory. It allows each economic sector to plan concretely.
Events that materialize the dynamic
Beyond the speeches, several meetings have already given shape to this year. Bharat Innovates, organized in Nice from June 14 to 16, brought together more than a hundred Indian deeptech start-ups, according to Sophianet. The event covered thirteen technological themes, from semiconductors to the industry of the future. Ambition India, organized by Business France in Paris on April 28, had previously brought together a large panel of French and Indian leaders around the issues of investment and technological sovereignty. These formats are designed to generate B2B meetings and partnership signatures. They demonstrate a desire to move away from symbols and into the operational.
An economic relationship that is already densifying
The figures confirm this strengthening of ties between the two countries. According to the General Directorate of the Treasury, bilateral France-India trade reached 17 billion euros in 2024, up 3% year-on-year. This commercial dynamic provides a solid foundation for the technological ambition displayed for 2026. French SMEs and start-ups risk remaining on the sidelines if support does not follow. A thematic year creates visibility, but it alone is not enough to generate contracts. The real test will be the ability of the two countries to turn these meetings into licensing agreements, joint ventures or joint research programs, long after the spotlight has faded.
