The Sage group publishes several software programs depending on the company’s profile. Sage Active is the one that targets VSEs: a cloud interface, two plans, an integrated DGFiP approved platform.
Sage Active is 100% cloud management software published by the Sage group, intended for VSEs with up to 19 employees. It covers invoicing, commercial management and pre-accounting from an interface accessible on PC, Mac and tablet. Available in two plans, Starter and Essentials, it natively integrates Sage Network, the DGFiP approved platform, at no additional cost.
What company profile is Sage Active for?
Sage Active is aimed at small businesses with fewer than 20 employees whose manager manages invoicing independently and delegates accounting to an external accountant, according to the official Sage France product page. The software is accessible on PC, Mac and tablet, without local installation. Sage Active does not cover the needs of structures that manage stocks nor those of companies with more than 20 employees. For these profiles, the Sage group offers Sage 50. The profiles that use Sage Active include:
- Self-employed people and micro-enterprises who issue quotes and invoices without managing internal accounting
- VSEs with fewer than 10 employees who outsource their accounting and wish to give their firm direct access to data
The two Sage Active formulas: Starter and Essentials
Sage Active is available in two plans adapted to different levels of accounting autonomy, according to the official Sage France product page. Sage Active Starter covers invoicing and business management for executives who fully outsource their accounting. Sage Active Essentials adds a complete accounting module, payroll and HR management, intended for structures that have sufficient internal skills to keep their accounts on a daily basis.
| Functionality | Sage Active Starter | Sage Essentials |
| Billing and quotes | Yes | Yes |
| Commercial management | Yes | Yes |
| Bank synchronization | Yes | Yes |
| Sage Copilot (AI assistant) | Yes | Yes |
| Internal accounting | No | Yes |
| VAT declaration | No | Yes |
| Annual financial reports | No | Yes |
| Payroll and HR | No | Yes (1 employee included) |
| Accountant access | Yes | Yes |
| Sage Network (DGFiP approved PDP) | Yes | Yes |
In both plans, the accountant has direct access to the software without exchanging files, and Sage Network, the DGFiP approved platform, is natively integrated at no additional cost, according to data published by Sage France. These two characteristics apply regardless of the size of the structure or the organization of the accounting firm.
Sage Active automates repetitive accounting tasks
Sage Active integrates a set of automation features that reduce the administrative burden on the manager without requiring advanced accounting skills, according to the official Sage France product page. These automations cover the three tasks which concentrate the majority of the daily management time of a VSE:
- AI expense categorization: purchase invoices and receipts are recognized and assigned to the correct accounts automatically, without manual entry
- Automatic bank reconciliation: bank transactions are transformed into accounting entries without intervention from the manager
- Sage Copilot: Built-in AI assistant analyzes financial data and makes recommendations for decision-making
Bank synchronization is available in both Sage plans. It connects the software to the company’s accounts in real time, which allows the manager and the accountant to have the same banking data without manual transmission of statements.
Sage Active and the accountant: shared access without exchanging files
Sage Active natively integrates secure access for the accountant, which connects directly to the manager’s file without any document being exported or transmitted by email, according to the official Sage France product page. The data is identical for both parties, in real time, eliminating the back-and-forth of file versions and missing parts.
Each participant has access rights defined according to their role. The manager retains full access, the accountant intervenes on the modules necessary for his accounting processing, an internal employee may be limited to certain functions. Each modification is time-stamped and associated with the ID of the user who made it, which removes any ambiguity in the event of a discrepancy between the data.
This level of traceability changes the nature of the end-of-month exchanges between the company and its accountant. When an entry is modified, they immediately identify who made it, when, and from what access, without exchanging messages to reconstruct the history.
Sage Active and the 2026 electronic invoicing reform
From September 1, 2026, all companies subject to VAT must receive their invoices via an approved platform registered by the DGFiP, according to economie.gouv.fr. For VSEs that use Sage Active, this obligation does not generate any additional steps: Sage Network, the approved platform of the Sage group, is natively integrated into both formulas at no additional cost, according to data published on the Sage website.
Sage Network obtained its final registration with the DGFiP on December 22, 2025 according to the official list of approved platforms published on impots.gouv.fr. The obligations covered by Sage Active through Sage Network are as follows:
- Receipt of electronic invoices from September 1, 2026
- Issuance of electronic invoices from September 1, 2027 for VSEs and SMEs, according to article 91 of the finance law for 2024
- Support for Factur-X, UBL and CII regulatory formats
- Transmission of e-reporting data to the DGFiP
Frequently asked questions about Sage Active
Is Sage Active compatible with all accountants?
Compatibility does not depend on the firm: Sage Active includes native access for the accountant, who connects directly to the file without prior configuration or additional software. The fluidity of exchanges is guaranteed whatever the size or organization of the firm.
How many users can I add to Sage Active?
Sage Active is designed for one primary user per account. Additional access can be added according to the current pricing conditions published on sage.com. Accountant access is included natively in both plans without an additional user account, which covers the majority of the needs of a small business that outsources its accounting.
Is the data hosted in France?
Sage Active user data is hosted on Microsoft Azure, certified ISO 27001, the international reference standard for information systems security, according to information published by Sage France. Precise server location is available upon request from Sage.
Can you migrate from Sage Active to Sage 50 if the company grows?
The transition from Sage Active to Sage 50 is the natural trajectory for a small business that internalizes its accounting as it grows. As both solutions belong to the same ecosystem, data migration is made easier according to sage.com. It is recommended to anticipate this transition outside of accounting closing periods.
Does Sage Active work without an internet connection?
Sage Active is a 100% cloud solution. An internet connection is required to access all features. This constraint is inherent to the SaaS architecture, which in return guarantees permanent synchronization of data between the manager and the accountant.
