The acquisition of Micromania comes at a time when the physical video game market is declining, with stated ambitions to revive and expand the network.
The French video game stores Micromania-Zing were bought by a Franco-Quebec consortium composed of Stephan Tétrault, Jean-François Chenail as well as Sandra and Stephen Callahan. This repurchase comes in a context of falling sales of physical games.
The American group GameStop announced at the beginning of 2025 its desire to sell its stores in France, after having bought Micromania in 2008. Buyers indicate that they want to “relaunch Micromania”, in a context of a downward trend in sales of physical games and the dematerialization of video games. At the beginning of July, the giant Sony indicated that PlayStation video games would no longer be distributed on physical discs from 2028, but only sold in dematerialized formats.
The ambitions of the consortium
The new managers of Micromania wish in particular to strengthen their sales activities of derivative products and cards. The consortium also indicates that it will conduct “an in-depth analysis of the store network”, which could lead to store relocations, expansions or the opening of new stores.
“The first realization of the brand’s development ambition, a first +flagship+ store (emblematic store, Editor’s note) will open in October 2026,” added the buyers.
Among the buyers, the Canadian Stephan Tétrault bought the GameStop stores in Canada in 2025, since renamed EB Games. One of Micromania’s other buyers, Jean-François Chenail, is also a minority shareholder in EB Games.
The amount of the transaction was not specified in the press release.
