Neither beach nor mountains, this is the best place to vacation according to science

This unexpected destination would nevertheless be very beneficial for making the most of your vacation. More and more people are interested in it.

It’s the end of July and the holidays are in full swing. While some have already returned from vacation, others have not yet been able to take advantage of it. These moments are often an opportunity to take time for yourself, with your family, but above all to get away from home and everyday life for a well-deserved change of scenery. Enough to recharge the batteries.

In this area, several destinations are among the favorites of the French. First, the beach, a timeless classic. Good weather, salt water and a tan that will make all your colleagues jealous. Still in nature, others prefer steep hiking paths, in the mountains or in vast plains conducive to silence. Far from seaside resorts and their hustle and bustle.

However, another destination is increasingly emerging among vacationers. Expedia Group, a travel agency which operates numerous sites such as Expedia.com, Hotels.com and Hotwire.com, mentions it in its 2026 report. This unexpected vacation spot is none other than the farm. With its nature, its animals and its tranquility. Still according to the report, 84% of travelers express an interest in staying near a farm.

The data is particularly striking on the vacation rental site Abritel where mentions of farms in traveler reviews have increased by 300% this year. As if the presence of a farm nearby had become an essential point for travelers in the same way as that of a good restaurant or a good hotel bed. This simplicity could, in the long term, have better press than all-inclusive hotels.

But how can we explain this new attraction for farm holidays? Science makes it possible to explain and understand this phenomenon. The American and British scientific journal Social and Personality Psychology Compass published a study on the benefits of natural environments on the human body. And the results are very telling.

The study highlights the fact that prolonged exposure to these places in the great outdoors can effectively reduce stress and increase the well-being of vacationers. Everything employees are looking for during their precious weeks of paid vacation. The opposition to the urban environment allows the countryside and natural environments to provide significant benefits for vacationers’ rest.

This is explained in particular by the strong predominance of green in these environments. Green landscapes provide a calming setting because it sends safety signals to the body. In fact, the human brain lets down its guard and rests more easily. And that’s all that matters during the holidays.
